SUMMARY:December 5\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:Local\, original music in Riverwest is exactly what you will get on this special evening featuring alternating sets between the Jamaican roots-inspired sounds of The Tritonics and the clever\, contagious\, captivating songs of songwriter Francesca and her six string king sidekick (and Tritonic alumnus)\, Tom Plutshack. A school night / work night – friendly start time of 7:00pm makes it an easy decision. Six bucks. Join us! \nThe Tritonics are Jeff Stehr\, Dave Bolyard\, Glenn Asch\, Kyle Seifert\, Mike Lizzo and Peter Roller. They write\, arrange and perform original music written in the Jamaican roots styles of rock steady\, ska and reggae. They also cover crucial standards of those genres by artists like Alton Ellis\, Delroy Wilson\, Toots and the Maytalls\, The Heptones\, Johnny Clarke\, The Valentines and The Jamaicans. In addition\, The Tritonics apply a unique process they’ve dubbed “doowopification” to rock n roll classics by The Beatles\, The Rolling Stones\, The Kinks and many others. Doowopification reinterprets and revitalizes (Ital-izes!) classic rock standards\, anointing them in the name of Jah with stripped down\, Jamaican roots-style arrangements\, one drop-centered rhythm and harmony-heavy vocals. \nFrancesca & Tom Plutshack are a Milwaukee acoustic duo. \nShow at 7pm\, doors open at 6:30pm.

DESCRIPTION:Silk Torpedo is a trashy glitter proto-punk rock & roll band featuring the work of 1970s artists such as T Rex\, Mott the Hoople\, David Bowie\, the Stooges\, Slade\, Sweet\, and others. \nBack when I was in the Dummy Club\, my friend Crazy John (rest his soul) said if I ever have my own band I should call it Fly & the Swatters. A couple of years later I formed a new band and gave it that name. Members were rotated among my friends who were available at the time and we mostly played Quarters and other Riverwest haunts. I went on to be in several bands including The Alewives and Immortal Plants. Then I talked my way into Dr. Chow’s Love Medicine which lasted over 18 years. With the departure of singer/songwriter Frank Chandek I was in the position to keep our garage rock attitude going. Chow’s drummer Dan Glaser and bassist Joe Polizzi agreed to stay on and we added our friend Jessica Erin to grace us with her sultry vocals. -Fly (Paul Lawson)

SUMMARY:November 29\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:Testa Rosa’s self-titled 2007 debut was a breath a fresh air\, boasting a series of well-crafted and unassuming pop-rock songs anchored by chiming guitars\, crisp rhythms\, and the knockout vocals of Betty Blexrud-Strigens. It was the rare local album with the courage to be pretty\, a quality that many bands in Milwaukee’s male-dominated and punk and metal-weaned music scene cross the street to get away from. In many ways\, Testa Rosa was a nod to the city’s college-rock past\, though the band never veered into full-blown ’80s revivalism. It was a record steeped into mood and melody\, and those attributes also form the foundation of Testa Rosa’s long-awaited follow-up\, II. \nTesta Rosa once again applies the amped-up drama of classic girl-group records to dreamy ballads that brazenly pull at the heartstrings\, only this time with some extra muscle\, courtesy of producers Beau Sorenson and Shane Hochstettler. Blexrud-Strigens’ vocals remain the focal point\, reaching new heights of sweeping majesty on the “you done me wrong” weepie “My Sin” and the epic “The White Cobra.” Where II improves on Testa Rosa is in the added lushness of the instrumentation\, which captivates even on lightly breezy pop tunes\, like “If Only I Had Run” and the charmingly wordless “Carpet Cube.” Testa Rosa isn’t Milwaukee’s flashiest or edgiest rock band\, but on II it might be the most gorgeous. (by Steven Hyden January 6\, 2011) \nThe Cut-Outs is the story of four friends. Four friends who grew up with a mutual love of music. Whether combing through their parents record collection\, being intoduced to the The Clash and Wire from an uncle\, or being submerged in the sounds of Minor Threat and The Descendents while skateboarding through South Side alleys\, a seed was sown. \nAs influential as these bands and scenes were on the four friends\, they truly bonded over the tunefulness and energy of lads from across the pond (Oasis\, The Jam\, The Beatles\, New Order\, Blur\, Charlatans\, Gene to name a few) as well as the burgeoning late 90’s\, early 2000’s American Indie/Post-Rock scenes of Chapel Hill and the Midwest.\nThey soon formed a band. Writing and recording in Rob’s basement\, they honed their songcraft and began to play shows. They self-released a 4 song EP called “Bring The Beat Back” that shared the same vitality and tunefulness of their early influences. \nTim Kowalski-Bass\nJoel Van Gorder-Guitar & Vocals\nEric Abshagen-Keyboards & Backing Vocals\nRob Weber-Drums & Backing Vocals \nDoors at 8:00pm\, Show at 9:00pm

DESCRIPTION:Cashfire Sunset is…Ray Chi – drums\, Raj’r Taim – bass\,Sam Lozoff – guitar\, Jason Todd – vocals\, guitar\, farfisa. \nMax “Loammah” Williamson is an actor/musician from Summersville\, WV and has been living and performing in Milwaukee for 20 years. He is the bass player in Milwaukee’s art damaged punk band Dirty Dancing and has been seen on stage with Off The Wall Theatre\, Cabaret Milwaukee\, Splinter Group\, and Soulstice Theatre. Loammah is a mix of original\, classic folk and bluegrass music with rhythmic\, percussive overtones coupled with subtley captivating vocals. \nBen Paul Williams has been writing and performing music for more than 20 years since teaching himself on his dad’s old worn out acoustic guitar. He now has over 75 original songs in his catalog\, and has shared sets at Sidewalk Cafe\, Googie’s Lounge above The Living Room\, Naked Angels’ Tuesdays@9\, The Brick\, Waltz-Astoria\, Center Stage NY\, The BZ Douglas Carnivale\, Caffé Vivaldi\, Bremen Cafe\, Moct\, Linneman’s Riverwest Inn\, Growler’s\, and The Union Cabaret\, among other venues\, as well as busked his way across NY\, CA\, WI\, MI\, NH\, and TX. \nMilwaukee songster Brian Robert Kenney uses his rich baritone and evocative lyrics to conjure the folkloric landscape of an American Middle West full of dark and fractured beauty where meaning is unstable\, identity is unfixed\, and reality is littered with decaying dreams. From post-apocalyptic love songs to moldy old country crooners about existential crisis\, Mr. Kenney’s setlists are veritable flea markets\, where the listener is liable to find lumps of Cash and Robbins amidst the jagged charms of Dylan and Van Zandt. \n

DESCRIPTION:November 22nd\, 1963\, on the way to Dallas\, Pres. John F. Kennedy said to his wife\, “Jackie\, if somebody wants to shoot me from a window with a rifle\, nobody can stop it\, so why worry about it.” That morning he was assassinated. \nOn this year’s Anniversary of JFK’s Assassination\, Friday\, November 22nd at 7:30 pm at Linneman’s Riverwest Inn\,  1001 E. Locust St.\, a dramatic play reading of the assassinations of JFK\, Robert Kennedy\, Malcolm X and Dr. King will be presented. \nThe play\, Project Unspeakable\, was inspired by James Douglass’ groundbreaking and meticulously-researched book\, JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters.           \nIn the best tradition of live “political theatre\,” Project Unspeakable\, is a staged dramatic play reading whose previous performances have received standing ovations from hundreds while touching and moving people\, raising questions and provoking discussion\, controversy and reflection. \nSusie Krause wrote\, “PROJECT UNSPEAKABLE shatters conventional wisdom in its examination of the truth about the assassinations of JFK\, Dr King\, Malcolm\, and RFK\, told in direct quotations and documentation. It is riveting\, powerful\, and informationally unsettling. I was rapt the entire performance.” \nWritten by Court Dorsey\, this gripping play challenges the silence that for decades has surrounded the assassinations.  It delves into why these four men were targeted within a 5-year period\, who was responsible and why it matters.  The text of the play is based on historic facts and direct quotes and contains documented information not widely known. \n____________________________________________ \nProduced locally by George Martin and Julie Enslow. Cast is Dorothy James\, George Martin\, Julie Enslow\, Eamon O’Neill\, Lenore Lee\, Curt Harris\, Steve Shea\, Joe Radoszewski\, Helen Harris\, Olu Sijuwade and Spike Bandy and others. \nFull performance time one hour. Followed by feedback and discussion

DESCRIPTION:J.R. & The Strangers proudly presents Riverwest Roots Revival at Linneman’s Riverwest Inn (1001 E Locust\, Milwaukee\, WI). A celebration of roots music and a gathering of good people\, each edition of RRR showcases a fresh batch of Wisconsin musicians. Join us for a boot-stompin’\, beer-drinkin’ party November 16 from 7 p.m. to midnight! \nBen Harold (duo): 7:00-8:00 p.m.\nBen Harold is a seasoned singer\, songwriter\, performer\, and artist from Milwaukee\, WI. Ben has crafted and refined his musicianship and stage presence over the years on different stages throughout the Midwest and there is a maturity to his music and winsomeness to his presence that comes out whenever he hits the stage. \nThe Midnight Purchase: 8:15-9:15 p.m. \nThe Midnight Purchase is an americana band from Milwaukee\, WI. Orlando Peña\, Steve Luna\, Jimmy Richardson\, Nikolai Gurda and Derek Peterson put an exciting and unique spin on americana\, a genre that often favors tradition. \nJ.R. & The Strangers: 9:30-10:30 p.m.\nRolling through the heartland of Americana rust\, J.R. & The Strangers is on a roots rock mission to write songs and rattle stages. When Justin Jagler\, Ryan Neale\, Jake Stanzer and Lee Gray come together\, driving rhythms and dynamic guitars turn the pages of a neo-western book of revelations. \nWould Be Astronauts: 10:45-11:45 p.m.\nFour gentleman grounded by bone density\, too queasy to pull any G’s\, set down their space suits and turned to music. They Would Be Astronauts. \nDoors at 6pm\, music at 7pm\, $8 Cover

DESCRIPTION:Bill Camplin is a singer/songwriter and acoustic guitarist who began playing professionally in the Milwaukee Area in the late 1960’s. Bill writes and arranges his own material and has produced a considerable body of work. Bill was an integral part of the Milwaukee acoustic folk scene for many years and appeared regularly at various clubs including the Blue River Café\, Numero Unos\, The Crystal Palace\, The Avante Garde and the 19th Street Coffee House. \nBand Members\nJASON KLAGSTAD – Guitars\, backing vocals – Jason is considered one of the top live and studio musicians in the Milwaukee area and has been playing professionally for over 45 years. \nHe has been a member of several area and nationally known bands\, including stints with Howie Epstein (Tom Petty)\, Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads)\, Arroyo\, Color Radio\, Warner Bros. recording artist\, Semi-Twang\, Bill Camplin (since 1974) and the local rock band favorite\, Plumb Loco. His distinctive guitar playing style has been featured on many recordings. With Peter Buffet for example\, he recorded film\, tv and recording projects\, appearing on 3 Buffett albums and the soundtrack for the Kevin Costner television special\, 500 Nations. During his performing/recording career\, Jason also ran several area music stores\, including his own – Big Music\, a specialty music instrument store\, until the mid1990’s. \nPAUL WEHRLEY – Bass guitar – Although Paul played trombone in marching band while in high school\, he did not envision trombone as his musical nexus. A couple of friends needed a bass player and Paul\, always the organizer\, agreed. From 1974 – 1982 Paul co-founded and played with both RIO and Arroyo\, two of the region’s seminal Country Rock bands. His early immersion in that genre provided a deep connection with Bill Camplin’s material. \nAfter his four year stint with Arroyo he became one of region’s top studio engineers\, typically working out of Waukesha’s Breezeway studios producing albums for many regional and national Artists. During this time he also played for many years with local cover rock band\, Plumb Loco. Today\, Paul is a property manager and lives in Elm Grove with his wife Jane.
