SUMMARY:March 24\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Iowa City native Sam Knutson is an incredible talent\, a traditional folky whose skillful guitar work and songwriting pop right off the page. His new album “Donkey Island” is receiving rave reviews\, and this performance will serve as an album release! \nBuy “Donkey Island” on Bandcamp:\nhttps://samknutson.bandcamp.com/album/donkey-islandSpotify Link:\nhttps://open.spotify.com/album/5o91iphr4gmodSzCXC0zPF?si=Aag5TYlBRpa7gEJV1bRdvQ\n  \nBio:  After ten years running and writing for a pub rock band called Shame Train I literally stumbled into a job doing product placement for feature films. That paid me enough to take a year off which I used to become a better stage and sound tech\, better at seeing a bigger picture\, and to write songs to perform without a band. That led me to take closer look at the small live-performance theaters all over the mid-west called Opera Houses built alongside passenger rail lines around the turn of the last century. Iowa had tons of passenger rail\, so there are tons of small town Opera Houses. For a little over a year I have been developing programming\, booking\, doing community outreach and PR\, public speaking\, fundraising and performing as part of the folk music series The Iowa Opera House Project. \nWe have received equipment sponsorships\, donations national press\, in-state magazine and television coverage and spent almost no money on advertising. It’s a good story. It’s good for the state and being able to present world class talent that is home grown and picked to apply to a particular\, mostly acoustic aesthetic befitting these pre-electricity performance halls has lent credence to the cause\, and the Opera Houses. \nOnce a forgotten part of the history of the mid-west\, The Iowa Opera House Project seeks to bring the Opera Houses back to their rightful place as the centers of community entertainment tailored to their towns or as destination venues by presenting entertainment\, and gaining media coverage locally/show and on a larger scale covering the Project. \n\n\n\nLuke Cerny is a self-taught guitarist and composer from the Northwoods of Wisconsin. In 2014 Luke left his corporate job and started freelancing in pursuit of writing\, collaborating\, and performing. His first album chronicles the past 10 years of his life. It features an eclectic collection of songs he’s written over the decade that reflect his musical evolution and initiation into the roots of American music. \n \n\n\n\nEthan Keller is a singer-songwriter from Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. He was voted Solo Artist of the Year in the 2011 Radio Milwaukee Music Awards\, and Pop Artist of the Year in the 2011 Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) Awards. \n \n\nDoors at 7pm\, show at 8pm\, $10. \n

Consisting of Alli Johnson (vocals\, guitar)\, Amanda Carlson (ukulele\, vocals)\, and Chad Johnson (guitar\, mandolin\, vocals)\, the quartet has a penchant for exquisite vocal harmonies\, dynamic\, colorful arrangements\, vivid storytelling\, and shooting large wads of cash into the audience at their shows with a potato gun (source needed).\nAlli is the lead singer and founding member of festival-favorite The Selkie Girls\, having performed in nearly a dozen states with several TV appearances. She also directs the Milwaukee Irish Fest Choir and has taught voice\, guitar\, piano\, and ukulele privately for years. DESCRIPTION:6pm Doors\, 7pm Show\, $15 Advance here:  (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/brew-city-barn-burner-tickets-536186025837)\,  $20 Day of Show \n\nThe very best of Wisconsin traditional bluegrass comes to Linneman’s Riverwest Inn in beautiful Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. You won’t want to miss this spectacular\, star-studded lineup right here in Brew City. From longtime legends to up-and-coming talent\, this three band lineup featuring Sugar Bush\, Art Stevenson & High Water\, and The Mark Hembree Band is a perfect representation of the dynamic and thriving bluegrass community that is offered by the state of Wisconsin.\n\n\n\n—Sugar Bush—\nFeaturing members of Chicken Wire Empire\, The MilBillies\, and beyond\, SUGAR BUSH mishes and (definitely) mashes its way through its own synthesis of traditional and modern bluegrass. Formed out of picking circles in the dive bars of Milwaukee\, Sugar Bush is truly a super band of Milwaukee’s finest bluegrass musicians.\n\n\n\n\n—Art Stevenson & High Water—\nSince 1993\, Art Stevenson & High Water have been keeping traditional bluegrass alive in Wisconsin and surrounding states. They have released seven CD recordings of well-chosen songs and original compositions\, all of which received praise from reviews in the media\, and frequent airplay by radio music show hosts around the country. The band’s mission is to preserve the hard-driving traditional bluegrass sound while including material from other musical styles. In 2021 High Water emerged from the pandemic with a new mission\, and for the first time since 2001\, a new member!\nArt Stevenson is THE living legend of the Wisconsin bluegrass community and has played a primary role in ushering in the ever growing and thriving bluegrass scene we all share in our region.\n\n\n\n\n—The Mark Hembree Band—\nIt’s straight-ahead\, traditional bluegrass: hot picking\, solid rhythm\, tight harmonies\, good humor\, and a wealth of great stories make for an enjoyable show anytime you see the Mark Hembree Band.\nMark Hembree started his music career in Wisconsin in the 1970s\, and before long he was hosting a live radio show from the Glenmore Opera House near Green Bay. After a couple of years in Denver with the Monroe Doctrine\, he returned to Wisconsin briefly before an audition at a local festival netted a job with Country Music Hall of Fame legend Bill Monroe\, the Father of Bluegrass Music. He became a Blue Grass Boy in 1979 and worked with Monroe for five years\, then was one of the founding members of the Nashville Bluegrass Band. While in Nashville he recorded with several well-known artists\, including the all-star band Dreadful Snakes (with Jerry Douglas\, Béla Fleck\, Roland White\, Blaine Sprouse\, and Pat Enright) and Peter Rowan (on the Grammy-nominated album “New Moon Rising”). He returned to Wisconsin in 1989\, played with local bluegrass groups the Rounders and Nob Hill Boys\, and Western swing bands the Western Box Turtles (including Asleep at the Wheel steel guitarist Eddie Rivers) and his own group\, the Best Westerns.\nMark Hembree also recently published his memoirs from his time touring with the Father of Bluegrass Music himself\, Bill Monroe. Find his book “On the Bus with Bill Monroe” wherever you buy your books\, and read more here:\nA backstage audition led Mark Hembree into a five-year stint (1979–1984) as the bassist for Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys. Hembree’s journey included playing at the White House and on the acclaimed album Master of Bluegrass. But it also put him on a collision course with the rigors of touring\, the mysteries of Southern culture\, and the complex personality of bandleader-legend Bill Monroe. Whether it’s figuring out the best time for breakfast (early) or for beating the boss at poker (never)\, Hembree gives readers an up-close look at the occasionally exalting\, often unglamorous life of a touring musician in the sometimes baffling\, always colorful company of a bluegrass icon.\nThe amusing story of a Yankee fish out of water\, On the Bus with Bill Monroe mixes memoir with storytelling to recount the adventures of a Northerner learning new ways and the Old South.\n \n\n6pm Doors\, 7pm Show\, $15 Advance here:  (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/brew-city-barn-burner-tickets-536186025837)\,  $20 Day of Show

DESCRIPTION:Dogs at Large had to postpone\, so\, instead Night Again is filling in! \nNight Again is an indie-punk band based in Chicago/Milwaukee. Drawing influence from bands like Cursive\, Jawbox\, Braid\, and Bear vs Shark\, Night Again combines angular song structures with knotty\, interplaying guitar riffs\, and poetic lyrics. In 2022\, they released their first record entitled OUT OF BODY. A dark and expansive record that combines elements of post-hardcore\, shoegaze\, and folk. \n \n\nSince 2015\, Chicago’s Dogs at Large has been consistently creating “languid\, Americana-inflected indie rock\,” as described by the Chicago Reader. The group’s discography features songs inspired by Gram Parsons\, Neil Young\, Judee Sill\, and Big Star\, but Dogs at Large may also get compared to modern country-influenced indie artists like Cut Worms\, Dougie Poole\, or Daniel Romano. \n \n\nRooted in folk but hardly bound to it\, Caley Conway‘s inventive style ranges from jazz to post-rock\, hints at the familiar\, and embraces a dissonant beauty. The Milwaukeean’s breezy voice and disarming wit belie a deep sonic complexity\, bringing a new set of rules to the singer-songwriter paradigm. \n \n\nRainbow Cobra  is a new rock band to look out for\, incorporating country and folk sensibilities into their warm sound. Their debut EP is out and it’s three songs that yearn for change and for something good to happen after putting yourself through hell. With rugged honesty about seeking a better place\, Rainbow Cobra let out a cry with “Falcon Yard EP”; we look forward to seeing what they’ll do from here.  (Breaking & Entering) \n \n  \n\nDoors 7pm\, show at 8pm\, $10

DESCRIPTION:Doors at 7:00pm\, show at 8:00  $10 \nBristlehead is a 4-piece band comprised of members of Semi Twang\, Paul Cebar and The Mosleys doing original pop music and other stuff we like. \n“On the surface Mike Fredrickson’s new album Home for Lunch is another chapter in a long collection of albums that walk a tightrope stretched between catchy pop and twangy country music. Yet\, as is often the case with Fredrickson\, there is more to the picture than meets the eye. \nHome For Lunch CD Release @ Linneman’s\, 8 p.m. Friday March 10 with Alex Wilson \nThe songwriter and bassist’s story has been recounted before: a 1990 appearance on “Saturday Night Live” with The Spanic Boys\, performing a weekly Riverwest residency with The Mosleys\, joining Robbie Fulks and Paul Cebar’s bands and a career as a painter whose artworks not coincidentally grace most of his CDs. \n“Artists are like houseplants now\,” Fredrickson lamented in a 2020 interview. “We sit on the porch and hope somebody walks by and waters us once in a while.” (shepherdexpress.com/music/artists-beating-covid-19/mike-fredricksons-covid-era-song-everyday-reflects-anxiety- )Yet that attitude certainly has not reflected on his artistic process and work ethic. Every day he punches the clock and paints\, then plays music. Opening with the eponymous title track\, the music explodes out of the speakers with a joyous confidence and a smile as big as Montana\, while the rhythm section of Bill Siebert on drums and Amy Ashby on upright bass lay down a seriously swinging foundation for Jimmy McCarthy’s voice and guitar. Ostensibly about a club where you can “take that jive and leave it at the door” and escape from your day-to-day problems\, McCarthy’s lyrics demonstrate a sharp intelligence. (Album Review: Leave It At The Door – Rhys Williams / Reviewer for Blues Blast Magazine) \n \n\n  \nDoors at 1:30pm\, show at 2:30pm\, $12

DESCRIPTION:Rucksack Revolution   A rare show featuring the duo of Sarah Vos (Dead Horses) and Adam Greuel (Horseshoes & Hand Grenades) performing together in Milwaukee\, WI. \nMarch 3.  Doors at 7pm\, show at 8pm.  Tickets\, $20 advance\, $30 at the door.\, Advance tickets online here:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/rucksack-revolution-live-at-linnemans-riverwest-in-milwaukee-wi-tickets-463871842167 \nBio:\nBio’s sure are a funny thing. Sometimes the band writes them for themselves\, other times they pay a bunch of money to have a professional do it. Well\, instead of that whole hoopla\, I’m just going to explain why I think Sarah and I find serious amounts of joy in making music together. We met back in the early days of Dead Horses and Horseshoes & Hand Grenades. Those are our two “main bands”\, ya know\, our day jobs. Anyhow\, we immediately hit it off and became friends. I think there was a sense of musical and life curiosity\, as well as mutual respect\, that drew us together. That feeling led to us hanging out at my college rental house in Stevens Point. We started playing music together and there was this wonderful and immediate sense of chemistry. The floors were wooden\, and I think that made the sound sparkle a little bit too. That really was the first night of “Rucksack Revolution”. Since then\, our friendship and our music have grown and created some great nights of music and magic. Sometimes we play songs we’ve recently written\, other times we play songs from Dead Horses or Horseshoes\, and sometimes we even play songs we’ve never played for anyone before. Sometimes we feel real high\, sometimes we feel real low. I think we take comfort and pride in the acceptance that we have for one another and I think that creates a relaxed feeling that can lead to some beautiful sounds. In the spring and summer of 2021\, we decided to go to a recording studio and lay down some music that was uniquely us. It feels like that experience drew us musically closer yet and I feel great\, and grateful\, about what we created. People are always asking about the future and the past\, but sometimes it’s best to just see what is\, right now. When we get together\, we try to embrace that moment and hope that the folks that come around can join us in that. I think Sarah’s a wonderful songwriter\, a great human\, and a dear friend. I really\, really enjoy making music with her. How’s that for a damn bio? -Adam Greuel \nAdditional Information: “I see a vision of a great rucksack revolution thousands or even millions of young americans wandering around with rucksacks\, going up into the mountains to pray\, making children laugh and old men glad\, making young girls happy and old girls happier\, all of ’em zen lunatics who go about writing poems that happen to appear in their heads for no reason and also by being kind and also by strange unexpected acts keep giving visions of eternal freedom to everybody and to all living creatures.” -Jack Kerouac in Dharma Bums \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRucksack Revolution  March 3. Thank you to everyone who helped pull this event out of its three year hiatus…\nThere were a few things last night I forgot to announce like band name submission deadline and this years special challenge\, so please take a minute and read the details below.\nThere were also a handful of people not at the drawing. If you didn’t get your missing band mate contact info at the drawing\, or if you cannot reach someone (it’s possible I screwed something up too!) please get in touch with me.\nI’ll recap the rules once more here in case anyone needs a refresher…\n♫ There are a total of 14 bands\, consisting of 4 people each. The bands will perform over a two-night showcase at Linneman’s Riverwest Inn on Friday February 17th and Saturday February 18th (7 bands each night). Each band needs to come up with a 15-20 minute set of original music and ONE cover song. The event takes place in a bar\, and is therefore 21+ only.\n♫ Every year has an added stipulation that is like an extra challenge that keeps things fresh. Since it’s been a few year since we’ve done this I wanted to keep it simple and also possibly give people a seed idea for song writing and/or cover choosing. This year’s challenge is that ONE of your songs- it can be an original or your cover- has to PROMINANTLY feature the number of your band. I’m not going to get into semantics about how prominently other than basically – it should be noticeable. If you didn’t see your band number at the drawing\, they will be posted in the rough roster below. If you don’t understand the challenge\, please contact me for more explanation.\n♫ If someone drops out of your band for whatever reason\, do not panic. Think of it as an opportunity to team up with someone who isn’t a quitter\, or if you choose to continue on with just existing members\, a chance to be a trio?\nShould you want a replacement- Contact me\, and I will randomly draw from the reserve list and get you and your new bandmate in touch. Unfortunately\, as of right now there is no reserve list. I’m hoping that changes but for the moment if someone drops- you’re a trio. Think of this as motivation to recruit some reserves and do everything you can to make shit with your existing band mates work.\nYou may not recruit others from outside specifically for your band. You may not swap members with other bands. You may not quit a band and sign up again as a reserve in the same year- you CAN quit come back next year in a band\, and everyone is welcome at the shows always. Also\, if you need to drop out of your band\, please let me and your band know as soon as possible.\n♫ Each band must name itself by Sunday January 1st at 11:59pm. This must come in the form of a Facebook message\, email\, text message\, or written on paper. If you do not submit a name\, I will name your band for you. No amount of begging or excuses will change my mind. By this date\, I also need to know if your band can only play one of the two nights. I’ve got to make the schedule and get posters made\, etc…but I will try my best to accommodate bands with a schedule conflict. I’m juggling 14 bands so please keep show date requests to real conflicts– not just because you don’t want to play a certain night. Once the schedule is made\, I will not change it. There’s plenty of time to plan ahead.\n♫ To keep things running smoothly\, there will be shared equipment on stage each night. After the schedule comes out\, I will begin asking for volunteers who want to offer up their gear. The following will need to be provided:\n– 1 Drum set\n– 2 Guitar amps\n– 1 Bass amp\n– Linneman’s PA system and mics.\nI know not every band fits this exact setup\, but it works for most people. Jim can also run instruments directly through the PA. You should bring your own instrument cables\, pedals\, picks\, drumsticks\, etc.. Jim has Vocal mics for us to use however if you’d like to bring your own feel free. In the past\, depending on who is loaning the drum kit\, drummers have been asked to bring their own cymbals. More on that once the schedule comes out.\n♫ If anyone would like to still sign up on for the reserve list\, WE NEED YOU!!!!! just message me via my Facebook\, the AMU FB page\, or email me (Jess) Olivekroha@gmail.com with your name\, email\, phone number\, vax proof and the name(s) of anyone who you absolutely cannot be in a band with (these requests will be honored and kept confidential).\nALL MESSED UP YEAR 11 ROSTER:\nBand 1:\nAlex Sitze\nJacob Mcelrone\nJacob Otten\nRyan Walkoe\nBand 2:\nMax Hey\nShane Bric\nPaul Taldone\nTyler DuChateau\nBand 3:\nNicholas Gardner\nIan York\nChris Haise\nCasey Nieznanski\nBand 4:\nAlex Klosterman\nZacke Lyons\nDaniel Klebar\nJoe Kirschling\nBand 5:\nBrandon Chapin\nJess Kroha-Anderson\nAvery Luedke\nStephen Carriger\nBand 6:\nRob Anderson\nMick Sweigert\nHarley Jensen\nMaggie Dahlberg\nBand 7:\nRachel Orheim\nJake Wild\nSam Alberts\nJames Mechoir\nBand 8:\nTodd Ciske\nErica Veto\nJustin Engelbart\nDave Lucas\nBand 9:\nJohn Jucemich\nAlex Ogden\nTW Hansen\nGary Struck\nBand 10:\nJoel Kasda\nJasmine Mace\nRyan Claxton\nMax Williamson\nBand 11:\nOwen Goldin\nRobert Sinkey\nBrendan McDonough\nStephen V. DESCRIPTION:Lake Drive EP Release show for “Wordplay.” \nA rising band out of Milwaukee\, WI – Lake Drive continues to reach a growing fanbase with their emotionally compelling catalog & vibrant stage presence. They’re hard workers – focused on the release of their debut EP “Wordplay”. \nTheir music takes inspiration from some of their favorite artists\, creating an incredibly diverse yet pinpointed sound that has been described as: pop rock\, alternative emo\, indie rock. \nBAND MEMBERS: RAYVEN BURDETTE\, BRANDON DETAEGE\, TREVOR GALLAGHER\, & ADAM SECORD \n \n\nOUTDrejas:  Once upon a time\, there was a dude named Dave. Dave played guitar\, butdidn’t have any friends to form a band with. Dave decided to look on Craigslistand found a metal group that needed a bassist. He didn’t know how to playbass\, so he went to Guitar Center\, bought a bass\, and became their newestmember. He soon found himself playing venues and getting to know the folksthat booked the shows. One day\, Dave asked one of these folks if they would book his “other” bandthatplayed rock n’ roll instead of metal. The big secret here though is that Davedidn’t have another band. This is a fancy way of saying that Dave was lying. This particular booking agent booked Dave’s fake “band” (not knowing that itdidn’t actually exist). As crazy as it may sound\, Dave had a month to form arealband. This new band was called OUTDrejas because Dave’s last name is Drejasand he wanted his band to be outrageous. They took that month\, wrote somesongs\, and played that show. And guess what? They rocked! They rocked sohard in fact that they soon found themselves opening for Puddle of Mudd andlater playing at the House of Blues in Chicago!Fast forward to present day and OUTDrejas is now eight years into its rock n’rolljourney. They now have six wonderful members (and now Dave has lots offriends!). They officially have over 1 million YouTube streams and recentlyopened for the Counting Crows in front of 12\,000 people. \n \n\nDoors at 7pm\, show at 8pm\, $8
