SUMMARY:The HWAITING (화이팅) Open Stage Fundraiser * June 5\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:The HWAITING (화이팅) Open Stage is a vibrant open mic event held at Linneman’s Riverwest Inn in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. It was launched by City Youth Martial Arts (CYMA) as a fundraiser and community engagement project\, with the first event taking place in September 2024. The event is hosted by Marika Holbusz\, a singer-songwriter and martial artist\, as part of her community service project for her second-degree black belt. \nHWAITING Open Stage serves multiple purposes: it provides a platform for poets\, musicians\, dancers\, comedians\, mimes\, magicians\, and other performers to showcase their talents\, while also raising funds and awareness for CYMA. The nonprofit offers pay-what-you-can Taekwondo classes to Milwaukee youth\, promoting leadership\, confidence\, discipline\, and physical fitness. The event also emphasizes community support\, often including food drives and other charitable activities. \nEvent Format \nDoors open: Typically in the evening\, with sign-up lists for performers available upon arrival. \nPerformances: Open mic slots allow local artists to perform\, with featured performers highlighted during the event. \nAudience: Open to anyone interested in enjoying live performances or supporting local youth programs. \nCultural Significance \nThe name HWAITING (화이팅) is a Korean term used to offer encouragement and luck\, reflecting the martial arts roots of the organizing nonprofit. The event has become a much-anticipated fixture in Milwaukee’s arts scene\, celebrating creativity while fostering community engagement and youth empowerment. \nParticipation \nAnyone can participate\, whether performing or attending. Donations at the door support CYMA’s programs\, ensuring that martial arts education remains accessible to all city youth. The event is recurring\, often celebrated with special anniversaries and themed performances. \nHWAITING Open Stage is therefore not just an open mic—it is a community-driven celebration of the arts and youth development\, blending performance\, culture\, and social impact in Milwaukee.

SUMMARY:Chrystal Gales w/ The Dirty Sweet * June 4\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Chrystal Gales is five Milwaukee musicians with way too many side projects and just enough free evenings to make something happen. Stephen Ziel (vocals\, guitar) co-founded the legendary Pet Engine\, and Steve Vorass (drums) has kept time for Newski\, I’m Not A Pilot\, Mixtape\, and more. Together they anchor the songwriting and production—power-pop hooks with an indie-rock edge. \nRounding out the lineup: Matt Smith holds down the bass and doubles as the band’s recording engineer—when he’s not teaching audio at MATC or composing music you’ve definitely heard but would never guess is his. Mike “Bleezy” Bliesner founded ’90s alt-pop band Spanglemaker\, then turned his focus to producing and mixing for the Gufs\, Kyle Feerick\, and CG’s—along with performing live on guitar with the Gufs and Pet Engine. And Chris Guse\, professor by day at UW-Milwaukee\, rounds things out on keys—you might also catch him playing with Mixtape or Rocket Cat. \nFive guys\, a couple decades of Milwaukee music cred\, and a shared belief that the best songs sound like they were recorded by people who are having a great time. Check out “Nobody Gets What They Deserve.” \n \n\n\n\n\nThe Dirty Sweet began in the summer of 2023\, when bassist John Daniels and lead singer/guitarist Mike de Vogel approached fellow Milwaukee musician and lead guitarist/backing vocalist Chris Tishler with the idea of forming an original rock band based on Daniels’ hook-filled songs. \nDaniels and de Vogel played together in various bands since high school\, making their mark with their signature style of songwriting in the bands Wobble Test\, Soda\, Maki\, and Knit Delicate. Tishler played in various popular punk and rock bands in the same era\, fronting Johnny and the Losers\, Mothers Room\, Wheelie\, and CHIEF. Knowing each other for decades and playing on the same bills in various clubs\, the three realized their mutual tastes in pop and rock music would gel quite well together as a unit. They needed a drummer to round out the project\, and de Vogel said\, “I know a guy…”. \nA Minneapolis native\, drummer Jeff Jara honed his craft in its 80s and 90s music scene\, playing in the Willie Wisely Trio and later for MCA/Universal recording artists Shatterproof. Jara also plays in Alex Ballard & Sugarfoot\, and he and de Vogel met while playing in Alex’s short-lived Gram Parsons tribute project. The four got together\, and a few songs into the first rehearsal they knew they had something special. They’ve continued to build upwards ever since. \nThe Dirty Sweet’s infectious blend of  hard rock\, Americana\, and power pop recalls the raucous spirit of the Replacements and hook-laden anthems of Cheap Trick. Their 2025 double-A side single reflects their ability to infuse the past with present to create their own unique sound. “Sweet Baby Sweet” and “Marianne Unfaithful” were recorded by Lodewijk Broekhuizen at Jeff Hamilton’s Hamtone Studios and mixed by Al Weatherhead (Sparklehorse\, Bicentennial Drug Lord) at Sound of Music Studios. Both songs make a bold statement\, particularly in a debut recording: establishing a singular sound with great melodies\, beefy guitar riffs\, and wondrous harmonies…all draped in Daniels’ impassioned lyrical tales of faded evenings turned into late nights\, bar kids falling in and out of love\, and summers filled with the sounds of rock and roll. \nThe Dirty Sweet debuted in 2024 to positive reviews from crowds. The summer of 2025 proved to be fruitful\, with the band performing at major regional summer festivals. The band returned to the recording studio to continue tracking songs from their current cache in fall 2025 and early 2026\, to complete what will be their debut EP\, to be released in the summer. \n \n\nDoors at 6:00pm\, Music at 7:00pm\, $10

SUMMARY:Sapsucker w/ Breakup Tour\, & Socially Suspect * May 30\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Sapsucker is excitable\, expressive\, high energy\, and full of vim and vigor. Chirpy guitars and ample hooks meet a bouncing and tumbling rhythm section in our ecstatic mixture of pop and rock; we don’t stop jumping\, dancing\, and smiling once we start\, and we bet you’ll be doing the same! \n \n\nBreakup Tour is a Milwaukee-based bubble grunge supergroup formed by four friends over the 2020 pandemic.  The band includes Nat Otto [Man Random] on drums\, Sam Schrader [Bureaucratic Drift] on guitar\, D.H. Thomas [The Unitaskers] on guitar and omnichord\, and Amy Upthagrove [June Gloom\, Beach Static\, Intolerable Swill] on bass. \n \n\nFormed in March 2022\, Socially Suspect has garnered attention around Milwaukee for their unpredictable sound and lively performances. With influences spanning genres including progressive rock\, pop punk\, power pop\, and jazz fusion\, Socially Suspect brings a unique brand of alt-rock to the Milwaukee music scene. Socially Suspect’s own members can’t quite put a finger on their genre\, but that doesn’t matter. The band’s songs are as diverse as they are catchy—a medley of groovy basslines\, intricate lead guitars\, energetic drums\, and an anything-goes attitude. \n \n\nDoors at 7:00pm\, Music at 8:00pm\, $10

SUMMARY:Luke Callen Album Release w/ Dandy Freling * May 15\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Luke Callen is a songwriter – singer – instrumentalist and poet who spends most of his time living in the Upper Midwest – where the prairie meets the big woods and the rivers all run to the Mississippi. He will be releasing his latest Album – “Fool’s Spring” – on April 1st 2026. \nRecorded in a small cabin in Northern Wisconsin by Milwaukee’s own Will Hansen (Old Pup) – featuring three improvised instrumental pieces – field recordings of birds in Arkansas – Missouri – and Wisconsin – topical – personal and tongue in cheek songwriting – alongside ethereal fingerstyle and Travis style fingerpicking – accompanied by Pedal Steel – Bass – Electric Guitar – Drums – Percussion – Sounds – and Harmony Singers. \nOutside of music – Luke enjoys tending to his garden – communing with the natural world – propagating and distributing Native wildflowers and Woody shrubs – and playing in and around water. \nwebsite: www.lukecallen.com \nInstagram: www.instagram.com/_lukecallen_ \nBandcamp: https://lukecallenmusic.bandcamp.com/ \n \n\nDandy Freling is a boot-stompin’\, finger-pickin’ folkie hailing from Milwaukee\, Wisconsin — a troubadour with one foot in the dust of the past and the other planted firmly on a wooden stage somewhere down the road. Drawing from the high and lonesome hollers of the old-time greats\, Dandy channels the raw spirit of traditional American folk and country\, weaving it together with her own down-home storytelling and rough-hewn charm.  Armed with a well-worn guitar\, a voice that carries both grit and grace\, and a knack for songwriting that cuts straight to the bone\, Freling captures the heart of the wandering soul. \nWebsite: https://www.dandyfreling.com/ \nYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@dandyl.freling467/videos \nBandcamp: https://dandylfreling.bandcamp.com/ \nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/dandyfreling/ \nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dandy.l.freling/ \n \n\nDoors at 7:00pm\, Music at 8:00pm\, $10

SUMMARY:Bluejae w/ Rob Sender\, J.R. Wesley\, & Poet Kavon Cortez-Jones * May 9\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:The voice between worlds—channeling the energy of air and water through indie soul\, folk\, and poetic flow. Blujae’s music is a sacred space for vulnerability\, joy\, and remembrance of unconditional love. Rooted in authenticity and guided by freedom\, Blujae \n \n\nRobbie Sender is a Milwaukee based singer songwriter\, blending elements of country\, folk\, and roots music with punchy and poetic storytelling. Making his debut in 2025\, he has since found himself welcomed with open arms by the traditional country community\, the folk-punks\, and everyone in between. Lyricism lies at the heart of his music\, drawing on influences like Townes Van Zandt\, Luke Bell\, Conor Oberst\, and is quick to quote Tom Waits: “I like to think that my main instrument is vocabulary”. Raised on pop-punk and Patsy Cline\, he leans on the ancient wisdom of the greats – four chords and the truth. \n \n\nJ.R. Wesley is an independent musician from Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, known for blending folk\, indie\, and roots-inspired sounds into his music. Wesley’s work spans acoustic storytelling\, folk ballads\, and indie-roots arrangements\, often drawing on personal and narrative themes. His music is available for streaming and purchase via Bandcamp and other platforms jrwesley.bandcamp.com+1. He has released an EP titled Indiana (deluxe)\, which includes tracks like “don’t count him out” \n \n\nKavon “KJ” Cortez-Jones is a Milwaukee poet whose gregarious presence draws audiences into his waterfalls of words. He celebrated his 28th birthday in 2022. \n“I try my best to be an ambassador of the city. I wish folks saw Milwaukee in the way that I see it\,” KJ says. “I feel I lived through certain different angles of Milwaukee\, through the traumatic inner city and then diving into the community.” \nKJ published Club Noir\, a collection of his poetry in 2016. In 2022 he was looking ahead to releasing a new book including a hundred of his favorite memories with 100 Milwaukeeans in time for his 30th birthday in 2024. “Two years is enough\,” he says. \nIn his 2016 collection of poetry\, self-published as the book Club Noir\, KJ called Milwaukee the “Paris of the Midwest.” In his written and spoken words there is an evident love of the city\, its people\, its quirks\, its rhythms. There is also an uncalculating intimacy that swings on lattices of playful syllables from youthful nostalgia through emotional internality to careful observation of urban life. Overall\, readers—and especially live audiences—are struck by the expansiveness of KJ’s sonic portraits\, washed by waves of his rolling words. \n \n\nDoors at 6:30pm\, Music at 7:00pm\, $5

SUMMARY:Drive-A-Tron w/ Creature Weather\, & Vanity Plates * May 7\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Drive-a-tron is an indie-rock/dance band mixing together heavy grooves\, unexpected harmonies\, pulsing keyboards\, and poly-rhythmic lyrics as ingredients in a joyous musical burrito. Lightweight and easy to pack\, Drive-a-tron is typically run by one person (Paul Vash – Madison\, WI) who writes the songs\, plays the instruments\, makes the videos\, and changes the oil. \nDancing\, sweating\, and joy are the goals of Drive-a-tron\, but a closer look at the song lyrics may surprise you with stories of complex characters and situations. The excitement of the music comes through on stage with Paul performing on different instruments\, often with synced videos and friends\, and encouraging audience members to join in. Everyone who attends a Drive-a-tron show is invited to be “in the band”. \n \n\n“Down-the-street Milwaukee neighbors” Tad Jameyfield and John Doyle\, whose affinity for experimental pop became the common ground on which they built their Creature Weather project. Jameyfield’s affection for ’60s bands like The Zombies and The Buckinghams is all over their music. The weathered piano\, echoey vocals and harmonies set a tone.  – Radio Milwaukee- \n \n\nVanity Plates  – post-butt-rock for fans of Jeopardy but not the college tournament!!
