SUMMARY:February 23\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:Back when I was in the Dummy Club\, my friend Crazy John (rest his soul) said if I ever have my own band I should call it Fly & the Swatters. A couple of years later I formed a new band and gave it that name. Members were rotated among my friends who were available at the time and we mostly played Quarters and other Riverwest haunts. I went on to be in several bands including The Alewives and Immortal Plants. Then I talked my way into Dr. Chow’s Love Medicine which lasted over 18 years. With the departure of singer/songwriter Frank Chandek I was in the position to keep our garage rock attitude going. Chow’s drummer Dan Glaser and bassist Joe Polizzi agreed to stay on and we added our friend Jessica Erin to grace us with her sultry vocals. \nFormed in August 2013\, The Grovelers are a four piece band based out of Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. They deliver high energy\, original rock & roll. \nIn 1999 drummer Dave Somerscales and guitarist Jeff Callesen were informed that a band had canceled a show at Quarters. They stopped into the Riverwest bar and made the case to management to give their hastily assembled two-piece act\, Floor Model\, a shot on the stage. Quarters’ management agreed and the band’s 13-year-long (and counting) history began. Somerscales and Callesen have remained consistent members of the band since that first gig. \nSinger/Songwriter Twila Jean will also perform. \nDoors @ 8pm\, show @ 9pm!

DESCRIPTION:It was in 1957 that The Esquires musical group was formed in Milwaukee. Today the Moorer family is again generating the energy and excitement of the Original Esquires. Johnny Moorer is the leading member of the group performing out today. Their debut record for Bunky/Scepter was “Get on Up”\, (1967) which became a major hit in the United States\, peaking at #11 as a pop single but reaching #3 on the R&B charts. Following the release they played Chicago’s Regal Theater and the Apollo Theatre in New York City. Further singles were also successes\, and the group released one full-length LP. After five singles on Bunky the group signed a deal with Scepter themselves late in 1968. They later returned to Bunky and then\, in 1970\, signed with Capitol Records for one single (“Reach Out”) and Lamarr Records in 1971 for “Girls in the City”. They are a beloved and well known group originally helped formed by Harvey Scales\, and now consist of Rudy Jacobs of The Seven Sounds\, and Johnny Moorer\, the son\, who continues the musical legacy. \nWith special guests Tammie Moorer\, and Elements of Sound! \nAdmission for the show is $15 or two for $25! Doors at 7:00pm\, show at 8:00!

SUMMARY:February 8\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:Sam Llanas is an iconic American singer\, acoustic guitarist\, and songwriter. Best known\nfor his unique and distinctively soulful voice\, Llanas burst onto the national music scene\nin 1986 as part of The Bodeans. Their debut album Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams\, which\nwas produced by T Bone Burnett\, became one of the most critically acclaimed records of\nthat year. His voice was the cornerstone of their sound and was the heart of their tight\nharmonies.\nAfter 25 years of a storied career with the band\, including being a part of U2’s\ncelebrated Joshua Tree tour\, singing on Robbie Robertson’s “Somewhere Down the\nCrazy River\,” being voted best new band by the readers of Rolling Stone Magazine\, and\nsharing the stage with such luminaries as David Bowie\, Paul Simon\, Bob Dylan\, and Tom\nPetty it was time for a change.\nAfter leaving in 2011\, Llanas released 4 A.M.\, a stripped down\, quietly introspective\noffering that reflected the mood of the title. Once again critics were taken with the\nhaunting quality of his singing and his ability to construct concise songs with lovely\nmelodies that manage to say a lot with a few simple basic chords and a minimum of\nstraightforward words.\nIn 2014 came The Whole Night Thru\, the third installment (he released his first solo\nalbum\, A Good Day to Die in ‘97) of what Llanas calls his night music. While retaining a\nmostly darker tone\, “TWNT” also contained elements of his former bands most loved\nsongs (it was Llanas after all who wrote his former bands biggest hit “Closer To Free”).\nIn early 2018\, Llanas released Return of the Goya – Part 1. The title refers to his beloved\nguitar that was stolen in 1987. “ROTG”marks his emergence back into the light with 11\nsongs that harken back to his deepest roots. Most of the songs showcase his long love of\nclassic country music (his earliest musical memory is hearing and being mesmerized by\nHank Williams). These songs are a loving tribute to a style of music witnessing simple\nsongs with strong melodies and harmonies telling stories that resonate in the heart.\nLongtime fans will be reminded of 2 of his most beloved songs (“Looking for me\nSomewhere” from 1986 and “I’m in Trouble Again” from ‘87). “ROTG” is proof that after\nmore than 30 years\, Llanas is at the top of his formidable game.\nFor more information visit www.samllanas.com.

DESCRIPTION:Dan Rodriguez\, an artist based out of Minneapolis\, MN\, is creating quite a buzz in the Midwest. The groove-based\, bluesy over-toned sound of his music\, mixed with his powerful\, yet seductive voice creates an atmosphere different from other music. It’s refreshing\, tantalizing\, and just plain good! \nOriginally from Detroit\, MI\, Dan moved to Minneapolis in 2004 to pursue music. He started a band with his brother\, Andre Rodriguez\, and called it The Auburns. They played locally for a couple of years and grew together as a band\, as brothers\, and as musicians. \nIn January\, 2008\, Dan started a self-titled solo project in the Twin Cities. Promoting his band as a trio\, Dan started playing venues in the local music scene. As things began to go well\, a greater demand for Dan’s music rose high enough to inspire him to record an album. \nJune 13th\, 2008\, the album Unreal was released in Minneapolis\, followed by a self-titled EP in 2011. His next album\, Roaring Dan\, was released in the Summer of 2013. \nIn September 2014 Budweiser released their “Friends Are Waiting” commercial featuring Dan’s performance of his original song “When You Come Home\,” which was written for the commercial and pitched through Minneapolis based company In The Groove Music. \nThe Summer of 2015 marks the release of Dan’s most prolific\, and widely distributed album “Come on Home\,” featuring the Budweiser song “Friends are Waiting” and singles “Rum River” and “California.” \nDan has since been playing locally and touring throughout the Midwest and beyond\, and sharing the stage with national acts including Grammy award winning duo The Civil Wars\, Pete Francis (Dispatch)\, NeedtoBreathe\, Augustana\, Tyrone Wells\, John McLaughlin\, Andy Grammer and Eric Hutchinson. \n“I’ve been in this business a long time. I recognize when somebody has something real. Dan is a true talent\, and seems to be ushering in a new wave of singer/songwriters around the Twin Cities. I can honestly say I’m excited for the world to hear what he’s got to offer.” – Michael Bland \nDoors 6:30\, Show 7pm \n\n\n\n\nPresale tickets here

DESCRIPTION:A stylistically diverse rock band from day one\, the members of Modern Joey have been pulling from a plethora of musical influences since their first rehearsal together. Relatively new to the Milwaukee scene and also still quite young\, they have come from a variety of former bands and possess a surprising level of musical knowledge for their age.  \nSeeking to be a song-oriented band\, Modern Joey puts effort into every aspect of their music\, specifically the categories of lyric writing and tight\, polished live performance. With many influences from the jam band scene as well as from prog rock\, they are no strangers to playing longer sets that also keep an audience engaged for an extended period. With three members of the band being competent vocalists\, 3-part harmony singing is an important aspect of their music which separates them from the herd. \nAt a Modern Joey show\, you will hear funky songs\, you will hear soulful songs; you will hear ballads and rockers; you just might hear sleazy rock and roll alongside a time signature you can’t place. It is that variety which all members of Modern Joey pride themselves on\, and that variety that keeps all ears satisfied. \n\nWonderful Bluffer is a progressive blues rock and soul influenced band formed in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin.

DESCRIPTION:“Wurk is a funk-fusion group from Madison\, WI\, described by Isthmus Magazine as “summer-jam-perfect”. Wurk’s style encompasses several genres\, with clear influences from bands like Snarky Puppy\, Thundercat\, Umphrey’s McGee\, Tauk\, The Motet\, Herbie Hancock\, Weather Report\, The Meters\, and many more. Their sound seeks to employ a musically educated yet groovy “Big City” tone. With songwriting by guitarist/vocalist\, Frank Laufenberg\, Wurk fills the gap between complexity and groove. Max Morkri\, a 2018 MAMA award nominee for Instrumentalist of the Year on drum set\, drives the band with his blend of solid grooving and intricate chops. Coupled with Max’s drumming\, Casey Seymour delivers powerful bass lines which pull the band together. Ryley Buchanan (synth/organ)\, Daniel Haschke (saxophone/flute) and Carl Hipenbecker (trumpet) add to Wurk’s complexity with horn lines\, effects\, and impressive solos. Most of Wurk’s members grew up in Mount Horeb\, Wisconsin\, just west of Madison. Their shared background creates the band’s closeness on stage and their ability to communicate musically. Wurk released two EPs in 2017 (Wurk\, Broken Disco); their third EP\, The Devil’s Wurk\, released in September of 2018.”
